We are supposed to be heading for the coldest winter in 30 years — but how does it measure up against the great chills of history?

There was no central heating to keep Britons warm between the 1500s and mid-1800s, a period known as ‘The Little Ice Age’.

This name was coined to tie together all the different global cooling events which took place, which produced the very coldest series of British winters for millennia.

North American 2008 Cooling Attributed to Natural Causes - NOAA

Cool sea surface temperatures overrode warming

Cooler North American temperatures in 2008 resulted from a strong natural effect, and the overall warming trend that has been observed since 1970 is likely to resume, according to university and NOAA scientists.

“Our work shows that there can be cold periods, but that does not mean the end of global warming. The recent coolness was caused by transitory natural factors that temporarily masked the human-caused signal,” said Judith Perlwitz, lead author of the study and a researcher with the Cooperative Institute for Research Environmental Sciences, and NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory, both in Boulder, Colo. The paper will be published Dec. 8 in Geophysical Research Letters.

Cosmic pattern to UK tree growth By Matt Walker

The growth of British trees appears to follow a cosmic pattern, with trees growing faster when high levels of cosmic radiation arrive from space.

Researchers made the discovery studying how growth rings of spruce trees have varied over the past half a century.

As yet, they cannot explain the pattern, but variation in cosmic rays impacted tree growth more than changes in temperature or precipitation.

The study is published in the scientific journal New Phytologist.

We were originally interested in a different topic, the climatological factors influencing forest growth,” says Ms Sigrid Dengel a postgraduate researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric and Environmental Science at the University of Edinburgh.

The relation of the rings to the solar cycle was much stronger than to any climatological factors

Is The Earth Entering A Cooling Cycle?

On the scientific research front, most news headlines tend to be aimed at showing how global temperatures are on a steady upward climb, but one report published last week appears to reveal that those upward trends may not be entirely accurate.

In an October 9 BBC News story, climate correspondent Paul Hudson noted that the warmest year on record was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998.

The story goes on to state that no climate increase has been measured over the past 11 years, although emissions of carbon dioxide continue to rise.

The BBC story cited experts who claim that although the world has gone through decades of rapid warmth during the 20th Century, the earth operates on natural climate cycles, which man has no control over.

Crunch time for El Nino by Dean Grubbs

My recent entry What does El Nino and a Scapegoat have in common? chronicled the plethora of weather events being blamed on El Nino. In terms of Atmospheric Angular Momentum (AAM) and the Southern Oscillation Index that the atmposphere has NOT adopted an El Nino produced circulation.

Now that summer is coming to an end its crunch time. Will the warm water along the equatorial Pacific PUT UP or SHUT UP in its effort to deliver an El Nino. The Nino regions are all in El Nino range and probably have been the source of the El Nino scapegoating still in progress. I am about to demonstrate that the El Nino - looking weather patterns are not being generated by the tropics. My opinion is that high latitude blocking which has ruled the summer generated the repetetive weather patterns APPEARING El Nino-like but not SOURCED by AAM anomalies.

Below is a comparison between AAM anomalies from this year and the previous one. You bee the judge regarding whether an El Nino is clearly underway. Here is 2009:

Long winter marches into June as unseasonable cold and snow continues

Here is a selection of links (using the PDF download file) to stories from the ClimateDepot.Com web site by Marc Morano. They illustrate that there is a continuation of a long cold winter in parts of our world.

Some would say that it's just a coincidence that these locations have had a prolonged winter at the same time our Sun has had a very long "Quiet" period between the end of Solar Cycle 23 and the start of Solar Cycle 24.

I for one don't believe in coincidences, and what you read in these stories today will be more common in the future as our world continues to cool down as we head into Low Solar Activity from a period of 50-60 years of High Activity.

In the last "Quiet" Sun period from 100 years ago, the temperature fall was not as noticeable as of today, and that was because the world had NOT been through the highest recorded period of Solar Activity since the Medieval warming period.
